Cult favorite Nueva Cantina nears opening of St. Pete Beach location

Some of the Burg’s best Mexicans are coming to St. Pete Beach soon. Nueva Cantina, a cult favorite on South 4th Street, is set to open the doors to a second location at 5955 Gulf Winds Boulevard, the same block from St. Pete Beach’s Postcard Inn.

The tasty restaurant is known for its modern takes on classic Mexican fare, popular happy hours, and a lively yet family-friendly atmosphere. Although the restaurant isn’t ready to announce a grand opening date just yet, it held a job fair over the weekend and plans to open “soon” this summer. Self-described as “exciting Mexican rooted in tradition,” Nueva Cantina offers lunch, dinner, brunch, an expansive bar, regular specials, and afternoon happy hours Monday through Saturday. In addition to the usual staples, the restaurants’ entree list includes fried calamari, bacon-wrapped jalapenos, tater tot nachos, and even Oaxacan chicken wings.

Nueva Cantina was also one of the first in town to offer birria, and their interpretation is well worth it. In addition to big burritos, steaming fajitas, and traditional Mexican fare, any dish featuring Nueva Cantina’s braised boneless prime rib — like beef de arbol — comes most recommended.

At their 4th Street location, there’s a full kids’ menu, and kids eat free all day every Sunday. Nueva Cantina also serves a brunch menu from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. They can be found in their St. Pete location at 1625 4th Street South.
