Eater Best New Restaurants: Fonda Lupita, Sanford NC on the list
A Sanford restaurant has been named one of the nation’s best new restaurants by online food publication Eater.
The restaurant opened in mid-March 2020, replacing a breakfast only, just as the COVID-19 pandemic was starting to hit the United States. A week before Fonda Lupita’s first night on duty, North Carolina had ordered restaurants to close their dining rooms in a bid to slow the spread of the virus.
The restaurant has persevered over the past year and a half and now has the eyes of the food world on its menu of gorditas, tacos with tortillas and freshly made tamales.
The restaurant is owned by Biridiana Frausto, who runs Fonda Lupito with her family, basing the menu on recipes handed down by generations of cooks in Mexico, according to the restaurant’s website.
Sanford is by far the smallest city represented on the Eater List, with other restaurants hailing from food capitals like New York, Austin, and San Francisco.
Writing about Fonda Lupita, Erin Perkins, editor-in-chief of Eater Carolinas, compared it to other small-town North Carolina restaurants that have become dining destinations, namely Kindred in the college town of Davidson. and Vivian Howard’s Chef & the Farmer in Kinston.
“While it’s true that a good restaurant can help define the city it’s in – and that’s certainly true in North Carolina – Fonda Lupita might just put Sanford on the map to have one of the kitchens. the most filling in North Carolina, ”Perkins wrote in history.
In the past, Eater has bestowed top honors on North Carolina chefs, including Chef of the Year for Ashley Christensen in 2017 and naming Gabe Barker from Pizzeria Mercato one of his Young Guns, a national distinction for emerging leaders, in 2018.
