Milpa lovers in the house? Anybody? If you have absolutely no idea what we’re referring to, you’ll want to pay close attention to the new restaurant to debut in Coconut Grove. Ancestral corn and the ancient Mexican farming techniques used to harvest it are the cornerstones of Los Felix, which opens in the neighborhood on Friday, September 17.

The modern Mexican restaurant takes inspiration from traditional cooking methods for its classic menu, where you can expect to find tacos and quesadillas made from hand-sewn tortillas on a mill. “Our mission is to prepare authentic Mexican dishes bursting with flavor that honor the sacred bond between man and corn using only ingredients that we would give to our families; seasonal, locally sourced and pasture food, ”says chef Sebastián Vargas, who has worked in high-end kitchens around the world, including Osteria Francescana and Eleven Madison Park. For this project, Vargas has teamed up with Grassfed Hospitality restaurateurs Josh Hackler and Pili Restrepo, who own the adjacent artisan food and wine market, Krüs kitchen.

The restaurant’s name pays homage to iconic Mexican actress María Félix, the embodiment of the legions of grandmothers and mothers who passed down the traditions and culture that Los Félix strives to share with its food and drink. As for the latter, it will serve natural wines from small producers in South America, Mexico, Europe and California. The selection of fresh orange, sparkling and red wines will be available by the bottle or by the glass.

But the flashbacks don’t end there. The restaurant will have a program dedicated to vinyl DJs who blow up their retro rhythms every Friday and Saturday via an analog sound system. “Our vision for an authentic Mexican restaurant is unique and combines our understanding of Mexican culture and traditions with our desire to deliver exceptional tastes and funky tunes,” Hackler explains. An old-fashioned Mexican spot in Miami’s oldest neighborhood? It sounds like a sure-fire bet for us.

Los Félix opens for dinner Tuesday through Saturday and for brunch and lunch on Sunday at 3413 Main Highway. Discover his website for more information.
