Michigan’s Best Local Dishes: El Granjero Mexican Grill in Grand Rapids Offers “Fast, Family-Friendly” Service

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – El Granjero Mexican Grill in Grand Rapids prides itself on serving high quality, homemade food without much waiting.

“You don’t have to wait for hours there,” said Paola Mendivil, restaurant vice president of the restaurant. “It’s always fast service, and people like it, especially during lunch hour when they only have about 30 minutes or an hour for their lunch.”

The family-run restaurant at 950 Bridge St. NW serves a variety of authentic Mexican dishes including nachos, tostadas, gorditas, tacos, tortas, quesadillas, enchiladas, fajitas and more. The restaurant celebrates its 14th anniversary on Friday October 1st.

“What’s really unique are our fries and our salsa,” she said. “We make our salsa there every day, and it’s like people buy it by the bucket. They like it so much.

One of the restaurant’s signature dishes is El Molcajete.

These are basically various ingredients used to make tacos, served in a large stone bowl, which include skirt steak, chicken breast, grilled cacti, chorizo, and grilled queso fresco. It is served with bean soup, avocado, grilled onions and a serving of corn or flour tortillas. It costs $ 22.

There are other versions that include pork and seafood.

“You can create so many different combinations,” Mendivil said. “It gives you the freedom to do whatever you want with your meal.”

She said the El Molcajete is a show.

“I like it every time someone orders this and it happens to the table, other people look at them like, ‘Oh my God, what is this? “Mendivil said.” It’s such a beautiful dish, it looks interesting and it’s hot. And it’s family style – people take their tortillas and make tacos out of them and they can share.

She added, “But of course we have times when people don’t share and they order it for themselves and say to themselves, ‘It’s all mine. “”
